This is the simple step-by-step guide that I wish I had when I was younger. This is all broken down for you so that you can make the right decision for yourself and your future… ---------- Most of the videos on youtube seem to recommend engineering, business, computer science, any career in the healthcare field, basically careers that are related to technology. A lot of other advice I hear out there is the opposite which is to just follow your heart and go with your passion. Many people end up working in a coffee shop after following this advice blindly. AS with most things in life, the truth lies somewhere in the middle which is what this video is going to be breaking down. The average debt that someone graduates with after going to an undergraduate school is a little over $37,000 and that figure is much higher if you go to graduate school. But this is an average and the actual debt can go much higher, just look at Matt D’Avella who made a video about how he paid off nearly $100k in debt after going to film school or countless other examples. Now the data is clear: Those who go to college make more money(College grads make over $17,000 more per year than non college grads), but the big question is… Is that correlation or causation? Does going to college make them more money or do people who have the ambition and smarts to go to college end up making more money? The median income for someone with just a high school diploma is around $34k a year. Considering only 27% of college graduates have a job related to their major, I think for the majority of them the truth is that they are smart and ambitious and that’s why they end up having a higher salary. However, there are some degrees that are outliers here where people consistently end up with a high paying job related to their degree and these are the majors I’m going to focus on in this video. Average cost vs time it takes to break even (A few examples): Communications 5.3 years to break even Psychology 11 years to break even Arts 8.8 years to break even Business: 3.2 years to break even Engineering: 2 years to break even The first step when thinking about choosing a college major is to write down your interests. Write out a list of things that you love, and honestly you should probably do this right now so you don’t forget. So many people try to just keep things in their heads without writing them down and I think that’s a big mistake. Make a list of at least 10 things that you love doing both inside and outside of the classroom. For reference, here’s a list of 10 things that I love: Video games Youtube/entertainment Math and problem solving Entrepreneurship Investing and personal finance Extreme sports Helping others Philanthropy/charity History Science and experiments The next thing you want to do is make a list of your strengths and weaknesses. Think about what people have told you that you’re good at in the past or maybe you’re bad at and make a list of 5 for each. Be as honest as possible here, and I’ve found it really helps to ask your family and friends what you’re good at and what you struggle with.
